Danish Names…

The names here are, for the most part the correct names our Sorensen family had and used prior to the journey to Utah. Patronymics being what they are… Ole Peder Sorensen's military document has his last name as Nicolaisen. Which I suppose would have been correct if we had stayed in Denmark.

Passenger Listing at Copenhagen—

This is a digital image of the Sorensen family, as the were recorded on page 54 of the Emigrants from Copenhagen Conference in the spring of 1857 ledger book. In the left margin you will see they are noted to recieve a wagon and oxen, at Iowa City, Iowa. There are twelve people in this group, Nils Otto Jorgensen, who was an apprentice in Nicolai's work shop, as a wheelright, came to America with our family. His (Nels) brother Andrew Andersen married Katherine Sophie Sorensen, Nicolai's oldest daughter and child. She and her husband came to Utah the following year, in 1858. So our family brought one of Jorgen Christian Andersen sons, and they brought one of Nicolai's daughters.

Nils Otto Jorgensen was killed by the Indians in Salt Creek Canyon in 1858 along with his new wife. Isaac Sorensen gives us the following— …There was 12 of us in the family, father, mother, and a hire, nine children beside a hired man that was with father in the old country when he joined the church. This hired man was a brother to my oldest sister Sophia’s man, he was killed by the Indians about eight months after we arrived in the valley. My oldest sister Sophia did not come out till 1858.
